The Mule sans Frein is a short Gauvain romance, preserved in a single manuscript (Berne, Bibliothèque de la Ville, MS 354) of the late 13th or early 14th century. The manner in which the figure of Gauvain is treated, compared to Gauvain’s other Romances, suggests an allegorical interpretation of the text: the positive Gauvain of the Mule is similar to the figure of miles Christi, that undertakes an allegorical journey through the otherworld to achieve the lost “temperance’s bridle”.

Abstract
The Mule sans Frein is a short Gauvain romance, preserved in a single manuscript (Berne, Bibliothèque de la Ville, MS 354) of the late 13th or early 14th century. The manner in which the figure of Gauvain is treated, compared to Gauvain’s other Romances, suggests an allegorical interpretation of the text: the positive Gauvain of the Mule is similar to the figure of miles Christi, that undertakes an allegorical journey through the otherworld to achieve the lost “temperance’s bridle”.File in questo prodotto:
