In 1922, after the end of the Great War, the League of Nation gave the responsibility of administering the territories of Palestine to the United Kingdom and established a Mandate accordingly. The United Kingdom had to create from the ashes of the old Ottoman structures new institutions in order to run the State with the provision of a future self-administration or independence. The task proved to be rather difficult as the British High Commissioner for Palestine found a fierce opposition from the Arab population, the Jewish immigrants and residents and even from the Catholic Church, because each group did not want to lose the privileges gained in the past centuries from the previous ruler.
