Abstract

A profile of Leosthenes the Athenian (d. 322 BCE). He commanded the Greek forces during the Lamian war (323-322 BCE) against Macedonian rule. His portrait as “the hero of the Greek resistance”, based on propaganda and detail-lacking accounts, impedes an established assessment of his career. However some basic facts are clear. He rose to prominence as the “prime mover” of the war in 324, when his services as mercenary captain are linked in sources with his opposition to Alexander the Great.
