The first results of the study carried out on the dune field of Is Arenas (Narbolia – San Vero Milis) are presented. The research has been carried out considering the sedimentological, floristic, vegetational and ecological aspects of the dune field, and focusing in particular on the embryonal dunes. The dune field, which is 6 km long and stretches for 3 km inland, because of its natural value has been recognised as a a S.I.C. (European Site of Importance) according to the EU Directive 92/43/CEE. For this research six transects from the shore to the rear limit of the dunes were mapped out. 25 plots of 4 m2 were set up based on the vegetational varieties. Along each transept a sedimentological sample was taken, floristical inventories were made and phytosociological surveys were carried out regarding the types of psammophylous geosigmataxa. The data obtained by this study have been subjected to statistical analysis in order to compare biocoenosis and sediments.

Abstract
