The main problem for observing bosonic statistics of excitons is that the density needed in usual quantum wells for quantum degeneracy was of the same order of the density at which the crossover to the fermionic statistics occurs. A breakthrough was to generate quantum well excitons inside a high-reflectivity semiconductor microcavity. Due to the resonant coupling between excitons and cavity photon mode, the normal modes of the optical excitations are the cavity polaritons, half-exciton, half-photon quasiparticles.

Abstract
