Sorption/desorption to/from streambed material, in particular ferrihydrite, is believed to be the main mechanism causing the observed diel variations in dissolved concentrations of Zn and As in the Baccu Locci stream in an area affected by past mining in Sardinia (Italy). Zinc sorption/desorption was primarily affected by temperature, while As sorption/desorption was affected by temperature and the competitive effect of aqueous carbonate species. Co-precipitation of Zn and As with calcite is another possible mechanism that, to be confirmed, requires a detailed examination of mineral and biological materials coating the streambed that is not available at present. All these processes potentially controlling the diel cycles of trace elements should be carefully considered to assess the effectiveness of remediation actions currently in progress at Baccu Locci.
