Il ruolo delle isole maggiori e minori nella diffusione del culto dei santi. Dinamiche e modalità di circolazione della devozione

This essay examines the documentary and material records about the cult of saints (entitlement of churches, sanctuaries, archaeological evidence) in the major and minor islands – sea and lake islands – that now belong to Italian territory. Its primary aim is to highlight ways and times of the cult circulation from the origins of Christianity to the Eighth century. In the great bulk of evidence, this study presents a sample review that is useful in setting cults and devotions in their social and historical context and in suggesting new lines of investigation.

Il contributo prende in esame le testimonianze scritte e materiali relative al culto dei santi (intitolazioni, santuari, evidenze archeologiche) nelle isole maggiori e minori oggi appartenenti al territorio italiano, sia marine che lacustri. La finalità è stata di individuare modi e tempi della circolazione della devozione dalle origini del cristianesimo all’VIII secolo. Nella mole delle attestazioni si è scelto di presentare in questa sede una ‘campionatura’, funzionale ad un inquadramento del fenomeno e a dare le linee per futuri approfondimenti.
