Rappresentare il sottosuolo: il fondo fotografico della miniera di Monteponi = Representing the subsurface: the photographic archive of the Monteponi mine site

At the beginning the second half of the 19th century, the mining site of Monteponi, situated at Iglesias, in south-western Sardinia, was witnessing a phase of renewed success thanks to the investment of Italian and foreign funds in the wake of the Savoy legislation on mining sites. At this time the city of Iglesias was transforming from an ancient medieval village into an industrial city, surrounded by mine heads, shafts, tunnels and the related processing yards. Hospitals, corner shops and houses for the families of miners moving to the village were also being built. The company operating the mine site commissioned photographers of the time to document the evolution of the village and that of the industrial operations, through imagines that are now held in the archival font of the Monteponi-Montevecchio Company, in the Municipality of Iglesias Historical Archives.
