A light field image is a sampling of the intensity and direction of the light rays crossing the optical lens of a digital light field camera. Processing of the light field information captured by a camera is necessary for rendering images of the scene to the final user at a given focal plane or viewpoint. In the area of light field imaging, several compression techniques are currently under research in order to foster the development of novel applications. An analysis of raw light field image compression of sliced lenslet array is presented in this paper. The distortion introduced by compression is measured in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio and the structural similarity index. The obtained results are finally discussed.

Abstract

A light field image is a sampling of the intensity and direction of the light rays crossing the optical lens of a digital light field camera. Processing of the light field information captured by a camera is necessary for rendering images of the scene to the final user at a given focal plane or viewpoint. In the area of light field imaging, several compression techniques are currently under research in order to foster the development of novel applications. An analysis of raw light field image compression of sliced lenslet array is presented in this paper. The distortion introduced by compression is measured in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio and the structural similarity index. The obtained results are finally discussed.
