Abstract

After a disappointing matrimonial experience, Maria Conti, a wealthy Roman widow, married Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli. Of the bond that joined Peppe and Mariuccia remains an extensive correspondence from which the feelings of mutual esteem that kept together the couple transpire, strengthened after the birth of Ciro and lasted until her death in 1837. The book contains the edition of the 77 letters written by Maria Conti to her husband and 11 to his son since 1829 until 1837; the edition is introduced by an extensive commentary of language and accompanied by a glossary. Despite the numerous interferences with the dialect and the oral tradition in Maria Conti, there is no trace of that unease revealed for centuries by many writers, especially women, towords a scribal practice perhaps a bit wobbly, but to which Maria Conti, driven by practical and emotional requirements, approached with a typically female enthusiasm and expressiveness. Testimony of the unexpected writing skill, considering the possibility of being cultered for a woman in the past, the letters return to, both the common reader and the specialist, the private linguistic dimension of a lady in the early nineteenth century through a genuine and spontaneous writing, as indeed that of a letter addressed to beloved ones.
