Abstract

Geographic Information Systems (GIS), are currently a key component of fisheries mamagement applied research because of their ability in spatial analysis that support decision making process. Focused on marine GIS design, a methodology was developed to return management measures for the sustainable exploitation and protection of resources and habitats where fishing is conducted. The most important result achieved was the localization of “Hot Spots”, areas where biological resources have a different sensitivity to trawl fishing activities. The experimental model, buil on a regional scale along Sardinian waters, was tested taking as an important reference resource for local fisheries: the Europian cod (Merluccius merluccius ).
