The study of language in the background of a extended-distributed approach to cognition (Love 2004; Spurrett & Cowley 2010) leads to a novel conception of language, where the target of linguistics is not limited by the idea of language as a “code”. Indeed, it extends to a set of phenomena – based on the idea of interaction – considered as essential for a true understanding of language development and use. In this paper, I present the main ideas of the extended-distributed approach to the study of language and show some interesting consequences of this view. In particular, I ask if the learning processes of some notions – traditionally considered as non linguistic (i.e. numerical notions) – can be explained analogously to linguistic phenomena in the extended-distributed view.
