The paper proposes an excursus of the guidelines adopted in the historical- and sociolinguistic field on female writings (with particular reference to those between the Middle Ages and early modern age), starting from the theoretical reflection on the relationship between language and gender, and the relative implications regarding the processes of education and acculturation of women. It then takes into consideration fifteen autograph letters, written in 1494 by female members of the Roman papal court, and addressed to Pope Alexander VI [Rodrigo Borgia], with the purpose of showing how a subtile analysis of the language allows to grasp the cultural skills of different writers, even united by the same historical and situational context, to distribute them on different levels, and thus to focus the practice of vulgar epistolary writing by lay women belonging to the upper class at the end of the fifteenth century.
Il contributo ripercorre gli orientamenti adottati in campo storico- e sociolinguistico sulle scritture femminili (con particolare riferimento a quelle tra Medioevo e prima Età moderna), a partire dalla riflessione teorica circa il rapporto tra linguaggio e genere, e dalle relative implicazioni riguardo ai processi di educazione e acculturazione delle donne. Si sofferma poi su una quindicina di lettere autografe, del 1494, stilate da nobildonne della corte pontificia, e dirette a Alessandro VI [Rodrigo Borgia], con l’intento di mostrare come un’analisi a grana fine della lingua permetta di cogliere le competenze culturali di scriventi diverse, ma accomunate da un medesimo contesto storico e situazionale, di distribuirle su livelli differenziati, e di mettere così a fuoco la pratica della scrittura epistolare in volgare da parte di donne laiche appartenenti a un ceto elevato sullo scorcio del XV secolo.
