At the end of the Sixties V. Stus read two books by N. Berdyaev, which he enthusiastically commented upon. In this article I attempt to compare Berdyaev’s main tenets with Stus’s human and artistic heritage, consciously distinguishing the personal realm from the creative one. Object of this comparison are key ideas in their work such as freedom, art and sin, as well as their mutual interaction. Moreover, I discuss whether the idea of «man as a microcosm» is suitable for an adequate description of Stus’s poetic world.

Abstract

At the end of the Sixties V. Stus read two books by N. Berdyaev, which he enthusiastically commented upon. In this article I attempt to compare Berdyaev’s main tenets with Stus’s human and artistic heritage, consciously distinguishing the personal realm from the creative one. Object of this comparison are key ideas in their work such as freedom, art and sin, as well as their mutual interaction. Moreover, I discuss whether the idea of «man as a microcosm» is suitable for an adequate description of Stus’s poetic world.
