The traditional midwife was still active in some areas of Sardinia until the Sixties of the twentieth century, according to oral sources. There are 12 interviews with traditional midwives and 2 interviews with people who lived in close contact with a traditional midwife, deceased at the time of the interview collected - except one in 2002 - in the Eighties and in the Nineties. The process of training, beliefs, practices, rituals put to use in helping for birth and postnatal care and relationships with other figures of health are described. In the traditional midwifery, as in popular medicine in general, the meaning and the practice of the sociality of the delivery, of the illness, of the patient and of the care emerge.

Abstract
The traditional midwife was still active in some areas of Sardinia until the Sixties of the twentieth century, according to oral sources. There are 12 interviews with traditional midwives and 2 interviews with people who lived in close contact with a traditional midwife, deceased at the time of the interview collected - except one in 2002 - in the Eighties and in the Nineties. The process of training, beliefs, practices, rituals put to use in helping for birth and postnatal care and relationships with other figures of health are described. In the traditional midwifery, as in popular medicine in general, the meaning and the practice of the sociality of the delivery, of the illness, of the patient and of the care emerge.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
