The integration of freight and passenger transport is a challenging and relevant opportunity for future mobility. This integration combines fixed scheduled transit services, demand-responsive transport services for people (or dial-a-ride) and transportation opportunities for freight, providing users with flexible and synchronised travel options. Special attention must be devoted to the tradeoff in joint transportation services for people and freight. Several planning issues are described to implement these integrated services successfully. This study explores relevant best practices adopted for integrated demand-responsive services for both people and freight, to establish the potential objectives and constraints in the specific area of interest.

Abstract

The integration of freight and passenger transport is a challenging and relevant opportunity for future mobility. This integration combines fixed scheduled transit services, demand-responsive transport services for people (or dial-a-ride) and transportation opportunities for freight, providing users with flexible and synchronised travel options. Special attention must be devoted to the tradeoff in joint transportation services for people and freight. Several planning issues are described to implement these integrated services successfully. This study explores relevant best practices adopted for integrated demand-responsive services for both people and freight, to establish the potential objectives and constraints in the specific area of interest.
