This paper presents the development of a drive system based on a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) with integrated supercapacitors for electric propulsion applications. Batteries, while capable of providing the required energy, have limitations related to cost, thermal management, and lifespan, especially in high-power, high-cycle applications. In this scenario, hybrid systems combining batteries and supercapacitors represent a promising solution, combining the high energy density of batteries with the rapid charge/discharge capability of supercapacitors. This paper investigates the integration of supercapacitors within an MMC (SC-ESS-MMC) and presents a control strategy validated through MATLAB/Simulink/SimScape, demonstrating the potential of this configuration for electric propulsion applications.
