In her contribution, Bukies deals with verbal courtesy in German and how to determine it linguistically. Using the example of online communication, she analyses the strategies and courtesy modes of a large German national public transport company, Deutsche Bahn, in relation to its customers. The focus of the study is on the use of the particle 'bitte' (please) in web texts in which the speech action is carried out as a request (in a broader sense). On the expressive side, it is examined which regularities can be identified in relation to the structural aspects and functions of 'bitte' and whether certain categories of action and types of politeness strategies can be derived from the situational and communicative contexts and from verbal politeness as a means of expression and of interaction according to Goffman (1991) and Ehlich (2005).
