During these last years TeleGIS Lab of Cagliari University has developed collaborative projects with third countries in the field of desertification studies. Different co-operation research projects are currently active between TeleGIS Lab and IRA Institute in Southern Tunisia (Remote Sensing Laboratory of Institut des Régions Arides), and "Departamento de Ciencias Geologicas de la Universitad Catolica del Norte", Antofagasta– Chile about the definition of desertification indicators and the study and implementation of a series of algorithms for multi-spectral, multi-temporal and multi-sensor land cover dynamics classification for the estimation of environmental changes. This research projects are consistent with current and future plans indicated in the Global Monitoring for Environment Security Project and with the really problems of effective data collecting for quantify global climate changes. Particularly the collaboration with IRA focuses on a comparative analysis aimed at the identification of socio-economic and environmental indicators of desertification in semi-arid ecosystems. To combat the loss of thousands of hectares of land each year, a major ongoing project is aimed at the development of a low cost multilevel approach (space, air and ground) to identify and quantify the severity, effects and extent of natural resources degradation by means of appropriate indicators. The main objective is to produce timely and accurate information (Integrated Information System on Desertifîcation, ISD) for early warning and decision making for natural disaster reduction.
