Re-opening the era of ferment: some evidence from smartphone and tablet industries

In the literature there is agreement on the fact that the era of ferment between different technologies sooner or later will end and a technology will prevail over the others, or they can coexists under certain conditions. The aim of this paper is to understand if the era of ferment between rival technologies can be reopened. In other words I argue that if a technology has prevailed this could not be a static situation but rather a dynamic one. In doing so I analyze some evidences from tablet and smartphone industries which register fast growing rates and, I argue, they are changing the equilibrium in the microprocessor and operating system industrie
