The paper analyses briefly the evolution of transparent glass and steel envelopes; from eighteenth-century green houses to the current envelopes that must accommodate people and no more plants and animals. The paper analyses the problem of overheating, especially during the summer. This problem can be solved with the use of new materials and innovative technologies. Through the analysis of two emblematic buildings in Germany and in particular through the studying of their roofs, performance and characteristics of these innovative materials and these technologies are described.

Abstract
