The solid products obtained by reacting sulphur and selenium containing donor molecules and halogens (I2, Br2) and interhalogens (IBr, ICl) are reviewed. All the data are organized in two main sections, according to the nature of the compounds: charge-transfer (C.T.) adducts and oxidation products of the donor, which include mainly hypervalent chalcogen compounds, dications with a chalcogen-chalcogen bond and two- chalcogen-coordinated iodine(I) complexes. Particular attention has been devoted to find analogies among the different classes of compounds in terms of their structural features. The FT-Raman frequencies observed for I2- and IBr-adducts are correlated to I-I and I-Br bond elongations.
