The works of German-speaking authors on their trip to Sardinia are an important resource for cultural studies, in which the concept of ‘otherness’ plays an important role in the creation of myths, stereotypes and prejudices on the island and its people. The analysis of ‘otherness’ is here drawn on important but almost forgotten works by Alfred Steinitzer, Max Niehaus, Thomas Münster, most of them never translated into Italian. Reports, travel journals and a novel are analyzed in terms of culture-contact, ‘hegemonic’ and ‘minor’ cultures, colonization, civilization, progress and modernity.
