Small ring macrocycles incorporating nitrile-functionalised arms can support binuclear AgI complexes bearing bridging CN- ligands. The X-ray crystal structure, IR and CP MAS 13C NMR spectra are reported for [Ag2(L1)2(μ-CN)][BF4] · MeCN (1), which represents the first complex incorporating a discrete μ2-κC:κC symmetrically bridged two-electron-donating CN- ligand. The complexes [Ag2(L2)2(μ-CN)]-[BF4] (3), and [Ag2(L3)2(μ-CN)][BF4] (4), have also been synthesised, and have been characterised both structurally and spectroscopically. In contrast to 1, 3 and 4 feature linear bridging μ2-κC:κN, four-electron-donating CN- ligands. Therefore, the length of the aliphatic chain in the functionalised macrocycles plays a crucial role in determining the observed co-ordination mode of the bridging CN- ligand.
