We describe for the first time the karyotype of Gymnothorax tile (Anguilliformes, Muraenidae). The chromosome number is 2n=42 and the karyotype is made up of 8 metacentric, 9 submetacentric and 14 acrocentric chromosome pairs. The relative lenght and the centromeric index of each chromosome pair have been measured. The constitutive heterochromatin has been located by chromosome banding.
