Castrum novo Montis de Castro e l’origine della Cagliari pisana: una questione ancora discussa

Castrum novum Montis de Castro è la denominazione con cui fu chiamato inizialmente l’insediamento che i Pisani fondarono sul Colle di Cagliari, donato loro dalla giudicessa Benedetta nel 1217. La ripetizione del termine castrum ha generato in alcuni studiosi l’ipotesi che il nuovo abitato avesse preso il posto di un antico castrum, risalente ad età bizantina o forse anche romana. Il contributo ripercorre l’evoluzione dei castra attraverso l’uso del termine e le scoperte archeologiche relative ai contesti di età bizantina nel mondo mediterraneo, al fine di comprendere le ragioni della denominazione della città pisana. Castrum novum Montis de Castro is the first name of the new settlement that Pisans built on the hill of Cagliari after the donationby Giudicessa Benedetta in 1217. The repeating of the name castrum let some people suppose that another castrum has been already built on the hill, in byzantine or roman period. This paper aims to retrace the evolution of the castra through the use of this name and the archaeological discoveries related to settlements of byzantine period in the Mediterranean world in order to know the meaning of the name of the town of the Pisans.
