Discusses the themes of accessibility to and use by the public of historic structures and complexes. Accessibility can often be dependent on a number of factors such as the shape and design of spaces and their traditional uses in the context of the historic city. At times, access is limited for security reasons, as is often the case with monumental buildings or urban parks. The authors provide examples of a number of sites throughout Italy that pose accessibility difficulties and others where problems of access have been addressed as part of conservation treatments. These are divided into architectonic barriers in historic city centers, monumental complexes, and archaeological sites; obstacles created by the need for security; and obstacles created by intense use by tourists.
