Objective: in the theoretical and research framework of the Diagnostic Classification: 0-3 Revised, the Authors present an empirical study on sleep disorders during infancy, investigating risk factors in the caregiving system and in the child emotional development. Method: in a group of mothers and children with sleep problems (N=25) and a group of control (N=25) were evaluated links among maternal depressive symptoms, quality of the parental interactive bedtime behaviour, child sleep and emotional problems. Results: results are in line with previous researches enlightening risk developmental factors may result from co-occurent variables, including dysfunctional patterns of interactions, maternal depressive affect and comorbidity between infant sleeping and emotional/relational problems that may affect functioning of the child and predict present and subsequent adaptation difficulties. Conclusions: suggested screening methodology gives empirical evidences for prevention programs planning and for parenthood supporting.
