The choice about the future represents for students that are finishing the secondary studies a crucial element of their life. This choice often mature in a climate of uncertainty and loneliness, through a decisional process that delays to identify informative priority and personal useful resources for accomplish the choice. University must furnish services adjusted for realize an incoming orientation and fit the needs of the young people. An exploratory investigation on a large group of students of the two last years of high school of Sardinia was conducted through a questionnaire for investigate some important variables in the process of post-diploma choice. Results shown significant differences between students that have decided to enroll to the University, those aimed to finish the studies and those resulting still undecided. These last, appear in their choices mostly influenced from contingent motivations (ex.: proximity of university), rather than from intrinsic (ex.: foster the level of education) or extrinsic (ex.: expectations of the parents) motivations, that characterizes respectively students who decided to matriculate or to terminate studies. There are significant gender differences: girls shown a multi-faced attitude saturated from vocational motives, while boys display a simpler attitude mostly saturated from functional motives. Similar differences are reflected in number of information sources, occupational expectations and possible selves. The results offer some hints for the design and implementation of actions of orientation which can answer in differentiated way at needs expressed from the students.
