The reflectance of cold rolled Aluminium during Xe-Cl excimer laser pulse irradiation with power densities in the range 10 MW/cm2 to 14 GW/cm2 has been investigated. Plasma formation at 500 MW/cm2 without previous melting at lower power is observed. "Laser cleaning" of the surface lowers plasma threshold to the pure Aluminium value and melting of the metal is detected as well between 60 and 110 MW /cm2. © 1989 SPIE.

Abstract

The reflectance of cold rolled Aluminium during Xe-Cl excimer laser pulse irradiation with power densities in the range 10 MW/cm2 to 14 GW/cm2 has been investigated. Plasma formation at 500 MW/cm2 without previous melting at lower power is observed. "Laser cleaning" of the surface lowers plasma threshold to the pure Aluminium value and melting of the metal is detected as well between 60 and 110 MW /cm2. © 1989 SPIE.
