The essay examines the legal status of metallariae in the later Roman Empire, starting from the references to metallariae preserved in C. 11.7(6).7. After overviewing the solutions of the Severian age regarding damnatae ad metalla, the research compares the regulation imposed by C. 11.7(6).7 with the regulation about metallarii contained in CTh. 10.19.15. Finally, the research shows that probably Justinian’s compilers, in C. 11.7(6).7, expressly equalized metallariae and metallarii to avoid doubts and elusive interpretations regarding the law prevously in force.
