This paper examines and criticizes Mauro Barberis’ ideas on the relationships between freedom and security. The author focuses on Barberis’ views on 1) security as individual right and collective interest; 2) rights and judicial balancing of rights through the criterion of proportionality; 3) the nature of contemporary islamic terrorism; 4) the counterterrorist measures adopted in Western countries since 9/11.
