By following Ricoeur’s perspective, this article aims to show how the dialectics between vulnerability and effort constitutes personal emancipation’s mechanism. The author starts from a confrontation between Emmanuel Levinas and Paul Ricœur’s philosophies of the human being, deepening various stages in order to reinterpret the initial idea that we are born as an individual, while to become a person is a process that goes through an interrelational and cultural dialectics. In this perspective, the idea of identity as a hermeneutical course of emancipation reveals to be an ethical challenge (as Ricoeur and Levinas help to understand). On the one hand, this is the ethical challenge between passivity/vulnerability and subjective powers, and, on the other hand, between the capacity to be recognised by others and the will to progress with them, through the challenges of mutual recognition.
