This paper aims at investigating an original genre created by the famous Saudi writer ‘Abduh Ḫāl (1962-), that is the qiṣṣah nī’ah (“the raw [short] story”), contained in the collection al-Awġād yaḍḥakūn (The Bastards laugh), which was published in 2002. If we assume that the adjective “raw” intends to evoke the raw material of impulses and desires that is the unconscious, a Freudian reading could be an important key of interpretation for this particular kind of short stories
