This paper aims to show the most relevant and innovative features of Digital Health Insurance, i.e. health insurance contracts which integrate traditional health cover with a variety of technological devices that access huge volumes of policyholder data. After a review of the main forms of digital health insurance offered by insurers operating on the Italian market, the paper highlights the opportunities for customers and the potentially disruptive effects on health risk assessment and pricing activities and on the role of insurance. We also focus on the main dangers related to the use of new technologies. In particular, the possible treatment of biometric, behavioral and genetic data of insurance companies by insurance companies raises doubts because of the potential contrast with fundamental rights of the individuals such as health, privacy and self-determination.
