Technological innovation has taken on a decisive role in the evolution of mankind, significantly improving the quality of life and the conditions of existence of millions of people. Modern ships need less and less personnel, so that during the cruise phases the crew simply checks the route and the regular operation of on-board machinery. The truth is that passenger transport has many elements that make it hardly compatible with unmanned navigation. Checking only the relationship between unmanned navigation and existing rules would be pointless. Abstract

Technological innovation has taken on a decisive role in the evolution of mankind, significantly improving the quality of life and the conditions of existence of millions of people. Modern ships need less and less personnel, so that during the cruise phases the crew simply checks the route and the regular operation of on-board machinery. The technology would certainly allow the transport of passengers with autonomous or remotely piloted ships, but this phenomenon is really slow to spread. The truth is that passenger transport has many elements that make it hardly compatible with unmanned navigation. Checking only the relationship between unmanned navigation and existing rules would be pointless. It would therefore be better to concentrate on the relationship between unmanned navigation and those millennial principles that are the foundations of international maritime law.
