L’internamento dei sudditi austro-ungarici in Italia durante la Grande guerra. Il caso di studio della Sardegna

The paper intends to fill a historiographical gap concerning the vicissitudes of the civilian internees during the Great War in the peripheral areas of the Kingdom of Italy, focusing on the internment of Austro-Hungarian subjects in Italy investigated from a regional perspective, that of Sardinia. The study, which is based on unpublished documentation kept at the State Archives in Cagliari, deals with the experiences of Austro-Hungarian subjects deported to the island during the three-year war period. The picture that emerges, thanks also to correspondence blocked by military censorship, is a cross-section of the enormous economic and social hardship exacerbated by the heavy conditions of isolation to which the civilian internees in Sardinia were subjected.

Il saggio intende colmare una lacuna storiografica circa le vicende relative agli internati civili negli anni della Grande Guerra nelle aree periferiche del Regno d’Italia concentrandosi sull’internamento dei sudditi austro-ungarici in Italia indagato in una prospettiva regionale, quella della Sardegna. Lo studio, che si basa su una documentazione inedita conservata presso l’Archivio di Stato di Cagliari, affronta le vicissitudini dei sudditi austro-ungarici deportati nell’isola nel corso del triennio bellico. Il quadro che emerge, grazie anche alle corrispondenze bloccate dalla censura militare, è uno spaccato dell’enorme disagio economico-sociale acuito dalle pesanti condizioni di isolamento cui erano sottoposti gli internati civili in Sardegna.
