This paper focuses on some aspects of the mining companies regulation in the classical period through a new analysis of epigraphic and jurisprudential sources. After showing that the mining companies mentioned in some important epigraphs were probably private companies regulated in a peculiar way, the research connects these peculiarities to the regulation that emerges from the Digest. On the one hand the research confirms that the private mining companies could have a certain external relevance, as admitted by the most recent doctrine, but on the other hand it also highlights the difficulties of indicating in greater detail the content and boundaries of such relevance.

Abstract

This paper focuses on some aspects of the mining companies regulation in the classical period through a new analysis of epigraphic and jurisprudential sources. After showing that the mining companies mentioned in some important epigraphs were probably private companies regulated in a peculiar way, the research connects these peculiarities to the regulation that emerges from the Digest. On the one hand the research confirms that the private mining companies could have a certain external relevance, as admitted by the most recent doctrine, but on the other hand it also highlights the difficulties of indicating in greater detail the content and boundaries of such relevance.
