This catalogue lists 85 popular etymologies of anthroponyms and human epithets found in the Mahabharata. They take for granted the extra-referential value of the names and predict, demonstrate or verify their correctness. Many passages do not explicitly quote the etymon but they allude to it, proving their literary purpose rather than the technical one. Although the derivation neither have the linguistic research as their main object nor follow a scientific method, they often are similar in previous Sanskrit works and sometimes they agree with the results of Western Historical linguistics.
