Abstract

The common image of the vampire avoiding the daylight and sucking blood apparently suggests an ancient predecessor can be found in the Nekyia scene in Odyssey XI. However, Byzantine sources show the differences between the Medieval and the modern idea, while a closer analysis of the fantastic elements in the ancient Greek novels reveals no traces of either, giving as an Antiquity without vampires.
