«Quei maledetti Eubei»: l’exemplum dell’aiuto ateniese agli Eubei nel 357 a. C. nei discorsi di Demostene

This article aims to investigate how Demosthenes exploited for rhetorical purposes the case of Athenian aid to the Euboeans in 357 B. C. First, I illustrate the attitude of Demosthenes and other orators toward the use of the past; then, I offer a reconstruction of the historical context of the featured episode; lastly, I analyse all the occurrences in which Demosthenes used aid offered to Euboea as a paradeigma. I argue that Demosthenes employed this episode to support precise points of his argumentation, often within a series of examples, of which the one relating to Euboea often was the most recent. His use of this example illustrates the virtually infinite possibilities that the re-use of the past offered to a capable and experienced orator.

Questo articolo si propone di indagare il modo in cui Demostene abbia adoperato a fini retorici il caso dell’aiuto ateniese agli Eubei nel 357 a. C. Per prima cosa, si illustra l’attitudine di Demostene e degli altri oratori verso l’uso del passato; poi, si offre una ricostruzione del contesto storico dell’episodio oggetto d’analisi; infine, si analizzano tutte le occorrenze in cui Demostene adoperò l’aiuto offerto all’Eubea come paradeigma. Si vuole sostenere che Demostene impiegò questo episodio per suffragare punti specifici della sua argomentazione, spesso all’interno di una concatenazione di esempi, di cui quello relativo all’Eubea spesso si rivela il più recente. Il suo uso di questo esempio illustra le possibilità, virtualmente infinite, che il riuso del passato offriva a un oratore capace ed esperto.
