«Il disordine è la delizia dell’immaginazione»: gli archivi storici delle università nell’era digitale

The historical archives of Italian universities have been the subject of careful analysis since 1994 and they are an invaluable source of information on society, on the relationship between education and power, and on the protagonists of Italian history. The relationship that universities have with their records is often controversial: apart from a few excellent ones, most universities have not carried out the necessary reorganization and description work. Heritage fragmentation in several preservation sites inevitably leads to a web mosaic of descriptions. This essay reconstructs the puzzle of university archives on the web, describing the heritage, the finding aids and the institutional websites.

Gli archivi storici delle università italiane, oggetto di attenta analisi già dal 1994, sono una fonte inestimabile di informazioni sulla società, sul rapporto tra istruzione e potere, sui protagonisti della storia della nostra penisola. Il rapporto che le università hanno con le proprie carte è spesso controverso: escludendo alcune eccellenze, la maggior parte degli atenei non ha portato avanti i necessari lavori di riordinamento e di descrizione. La frammentazione del patrimonio in più sedi conservative porta, inevitabilmente, a un mosaico descrittivo anche sul web. Il presente saggio ricompone il puzzle degli archivi universitari in rete, descrivendo il patrimonio, gli strumenti di ricerca e i siti istituzionali.
