The narrative reconstruction of the dynamics that govern a community in a precise time and space, that of a procession, becomes the place for questioning and monitoring the symptoms of a social malaise that Deledda does not hesitate to reveal. Faced with the classic ‘beam’ - the violation of the village priest's vow of chastity - the population remains impassive as they revolt over a colt stolen by a boy. Il saggio esamina la novella La festa del Cristo di Grazia Deledda. La novella si presenta come una parabola evangelica tradotta nella cultura del paese dell’autrice. Deledda si interroga sulla natura e la distribuzione del perdono da parte della comunità come autorità collettiva che regola eticamente e moralmente un insieme di individui. La ricostruzione narrativa delle dinamiche che regolano una comunità in un tempo e spazio precisi, quello di una processione, diventa il luogo di interrogazione e sorveglianza dei sintomi di un malessere societario che Deledda non esita a svelare. Di fronte alla classica trave – la trasgressione al voto di castità del prete del paese – la popolazione resta impassibile mentre si rivolta per un puledro rubato da un ragazzo.
