The article aims to describe the cultural linguistic contact in the Italian penitentiary context. It compares data collected within the DEPORT and RiUscire projects. Starting from a sociolinguistic analysis of the multiculturalism and of the plurilingualism in the penitentiary context, the projects, through the planning and organization of language, training and vocational courses, aimed at foster the possibility of social inclusion of foreign detainees. In the first part of this contribution, taking into consideration the data gained from autho-declarations of foreign detainees, communicative strategies and resources used with the foreign inmates and with the penitentiary staff are analysed within the framework of sociolinguistics and conversation analysis. In the second part, didactic approaches are suggested in order to develop an effective teaching practice devoted to this profile of learners and to maximize the advantages of their plurilingualism. The article contributes to the dissemination of the results and offers a reflection on good practices for the reinsertion of detainees conducted in several European countries.
