Prove di reclusione. La sperimentazione detentiva in Sardegna nell’Ottocento = Imprisonment Trials. Prison Experimentation in Sardinia in the 19th Century

The historical Sardinian prison system has been built since the 1830s, as architectures varying in layout, location, size, form, and functional distribution. Following their definitive decommissioning, at the beginning of the 21st century, four of these large detention architectures, located in the historical outskirts of the cities of Cagliari (Buoncammino), Sassari (San Sebastiano), Oristano (Ex Reggia Giudicale) and Tempio Pausania (La Rotonda), are in a state of abandonment, awaiting new functionalisation. On the other hand, this has also made it possible to launch a study oriented on the knowledge of these factories, developed from the documentary reconnaissance carried out at numerous archival institutions. This contribution proposes a synthesis of the historical architectural events that, for each prison, have been reconstructed from the intertwining of documentary information, the current state of the buildings and related political-legislative events.
