Dismissioni e nuovi usi. Le ex-carceri storiche nel XXI secolo = Disuse and New Uses. Former Historical Prisons in the 21st Century

The aim of this paper is to study which is the future of the historic decommitted prisons and, on this basis, to support the decision-making process for the restoration and reuse of other former prison still awaiting a project. The strong identity connotation of these factories, their psychological and social impact, as well as their economic potential, are in fact only some of the issues to be taken into account when choosing a new function for them. In this sense, the study of national and international case studies, developed in the light of the most recent theoretical developments on the subject of reuse, has made it possible to identify the design trends implemented since the second half of the twentieth century and to evaluate the results of these choices in terms of the enhancement of the factory, both in terms of the conservation and protection of tangible and intangible values and in terms of sustainability.
