In Epigrams 10,72 Martial rejects the flattering language that he has formerly used for Domitian, and welcomes the Truth that, thanks to Trajan, has returned to Rome from her exile in the Underworld. Veritas is described as rustica and with dry hair (line 11). After having deepened the meaning of this representation, the article dwells on the reception of Martial’s line in two Latin poems from late Antiquity to 17th century. The first of these texts is Anth. Lat. 768 R.2 (at line 7 the manuscript readings parens and priscis are defended); the second one is a neo-Latin Ode (Lyr. 4,47) by the poet Jacob Balde (1604-1668).

Abstract
4,47) by the poet Jacob Balde (1604-1668).File | Dimensione | Formato | |
