La portata del termine καθολικóς/universalis nel cristianesimo antico fra istanze di inclusività ed esigenze identitarie

This essay aims to investigate the origin and semantic evolution of the term καθολικός/catholicus, from the first pre-Christian attestations to the technical meaning assumed in the language of Christians. In particular, it analyzes the various stages through which the term with its original inclusiveness has gradually transformed into a sort of distinctive label with strong confessional and therefore exclusivistic connotations.

Questo saggio si propone di indagare l’origine e l’evoluzione semantica del termine καθολικός/catholicus, dalle prime attestazioni precristiane al significato tecnico assunto nel linguaggio dei cristiani. In particolare, vengono analizzate le diverse fasi attraverso le quali il termine dalla sua originaria inclusività si è progressivamente trasformato in una sorta di etichetta distintiva dalle forti connotazioni confessionali e quindi esclusivistiche.
