This essay focuses on septuagintal biblism ἐνωτίζομαι and the modalities of its formation. Born as a calque of the Hebrew ’āzăn through an etymological reflection, it easily entered into competition with other synonyms and it survived in the Byzantine age thanks to its presence in the LXX and in patristic literature. As an archaic or learned word, it has also left some traces in Modern Greek. The verb ἐνωτίζομαι provided the model for the lat. inaurior, which however did not enjoy the same success and soon disappeared.

Abstract

This essay focuses on septuagintal biblism ἐνωτίζομαι and the modalities of its formation. Born as a calque of the Hebrew ’āzăn through an etymological reflection, it easily entered into competition with other synonyms and it survived in the Byzantine age thanks to its presence in the LXX and in patristic literature. As an archaic or learned word, it has also left some traces in Modern Greek. The verb ἐνωτίζομαι provided the model for the lat. inaurior, which however did not enjoy the same success and soon disappeared.
