L’uso dei paramenti lapidei in bugnato nei monumenti sardi tra medioevo ed età contemporanea

The artistic stone processing as building material has been a practical study that, over the centuries, has led to the definition of an established construction technique applied several times across the country and regional territory. The changes that rustication underwent throughout history in Sardinia have induced, along with Renaissance influence, to the recurring presence of ornamental motifs. Cases of representative architecture are analyzed in order to achieve clarity on how these deco rative elements manifest and change over time. The rustication technique has also been very successful in contemporary times, being chosen as a communicative language rather than a constructive necessity. Some early twentieth century architecture examples in Cagliari perfectly explain the builders’ desire to recall ancient constructions. The use of ashlar stone has been maintained over the centuries as a guarantee of good communication of values such as expressive quality and representational character.
